REVIEW: August Secrets Recipe Book

First Impression: I was so excited when I saw the book online, I pre-ordered it immediately. I love the fact that the book was visually appealing. The quality of the book was above what I expected as per Naija but it wasn't there-there.



What I loved: I love that the book has variety of recipes that at you can use and not only for your baby. I loved the quality of the book, it is better than most prints done by Nigerian authors.




What I didn't like: No attention to details, there was a table of contents with page numbers but the actual pages were not numbered which makes it hard to just skip to what you need.





The structure of the book: There were repeated recipes and I confirmed that.

The quality; I know I said I loved the quality of the book overall but the pictures used shows that they were not deliberate about it. I get that it is a lot of work to make the food and take the pictures but the inconsistency with the images was too much. There were inconsistencies with the fonts and a few errors missed while editing.




Cost: N8,500 (I bought it while it was up for pre-order - don't know how much it costs now)
Rating: 3 Cuddly Love


Will I recommend this? Yes! Because, you can't have too many recipes at your finger tip.

How to care for baby's umbilical cord before it falls off

This was one of the issues that gave a bit of concern in the first 7 days, I don't know where we got the idea that the umbilical cord needs to fall off before 7 days. Doctors have said to give it 1-2 weeks for it to dry and fall off. The most important thing is to keep the area infection free by taking proper care of it. Here are ways to care for the cord while you wait. 

  • Keep the area clean; When you are leaving the hospital, you would be told to use cotton wool and spirit. I want to suggest using cotton bud as it is small and can be more targeted with cleaning.


  • Open it up let it dry; We are in Nigeria and realistically I know grandma won't agree when you say you want to wash-cloth bath your baby till the cord falls off and we keep stacking up the cloths in this humid climate so, ensure you take some time during the day to open it up. I noticed because of the baths we were giving him it wasn't drying up at the rate is was supposed to, so we opened it up and the cord fell off in a few days. 
Those are the most important things. Keep it clean, keep it dry and don't sweat it if it doesn't fall off before the naming. What you should sweat is if there are signs of infection which are 

  • Base appears red or swollen
  • Continues to bleed
  • Oozes yellowish or white pus
  • Produces foul smelling discharge
  • Seems painful to the baby
Please if you notice any of these, contact your doctor immediately.

Fun Christmas Family Traditions you can start || The Cuddle Blog

Christmas has always been a very special holiday for me because of what it represents and now that I have a Child I get to teach him about Christ and the essence of his birth which is very special to me.

Growing up, our Christmas tradition was just like most Nigerian families, decorate your home at the beginning of December, wake up to my Mum frying puff puff and cooking up a storm - fried rice, Jollof rice, chicken - then going to Church and coming back to feast on all the food till you can no longer move. Now thinking about it, it sounds like the feasting that takes place during Thanksgiving in some other parts of the world.


Since I got married - 2 years ago - my husband is always busy during the Christmas holiday and we’ve not really had a tradition as it’s always a quiet day. Now, we have a child and I won't want him to think that Christmas is not worth celebrating because he has an hardworking Daddy, I would love him to grow up with a tradition that he can appreciate and enjoy even if we have to do it right before his father gets busy.

 I searched online for different "What's in my hospital bag" videos and articles that made me come up with my list, but when I got to the hospital, we were given a list and obviously, we had to buy a lot of things that had I been in a foreign hospital, it won't be requested from me. So, here is a list for your Nigerian hospital bag;


For Mother
  • 1 Dressing gown
  • 1 Maternity Large Brassiers
  • 1 Large Towel
  • 4 Sanitary pad (ladysept) 
  • 1 pair of flat slippers
  • 1 Toilet soap
  • 1 tin of glucose
  • 1 Toothbrush 
  • 1 tube of toothpaste
  • 1 Body cream
  • 3 clean wrappers
  • 1 Sponge 
  • 2 nightingale spreadable
  • 1 Savlon (small bottle)
You can purchase some items you need below 
Nursing Bra on Jumia 
Hospital Bags on Jumia 
You can save a copy for yourself

For Baby
  • 4 Baby's clothes and vest (cotton)
  • 1 flannel gown
  • 2 baby Shawl to carry the baby
  • 2 Flannel material to carry the baby
  • 1 Big towel
  • 1 bottle of olive oil/Coconut Oil (to clean baby for the first time- you might need a big bottle)
  • 1 baby soap, oil, sponge and comb
  • 1 Antiseptic soap
  • 1 unbreakable flask
  • 1 diaper 
  • 1 methylated spirit(Small bottle)
  • 1 cotton wool
In my own hospital bag I had the following; 
  • Change of clothes for me - loose trousers and a top
  • 1 Diaper 
  • 1 Wipes 
  • 3 Cloths for the baby
  • 1 Baby shawl 
  • A ton of Socks 
  • 2 Mittens 
  • Baby care bag which had nail cutter, comb, thermometer etc
  • Towel
  • A stuffed animal
  • Underwear - Disposable pants and nursing bra
  • Slippers and socks 
  • Book 
  • Nursing Pillow
  • Car Seat - Of course this one is not for the 'Bag' 
  • washcloth, with baby soap, oil etc.
  • Pacifier and Bibs
  • Mosquito Net

3 things: New Born Essential 0-3 months || The Cuddle Blog

I know that there are many other things you need at this stage but I am tagging this "Essential" because somethings are more crucial than other things. In the first 3 months of your babys life I call it "Survival mode" most especially if you are a first time mum- because you are just getting starting this new experience and adjusting your life to accommodate a new baby and it is never easy. Here are 3 things that I think are essential to making it a lot more easier.


  1. Nursing Pillow; It's just amazing the difference this pillow makes when you are trying to breastfeed. When you are a sleep deprived new mother with a baby trying to get the hang of breastfeeding and wanting to feed all the time this is a life saver, the support. Oh the support. Your arms will thank you. 
  2. Burb Cloth: Spit Up is REAL and boy is it disgusting!!! Don't get me wrong, I love my baby but that love doesn't extend to what comes out of his mouth.
    You will need the burb cloths, it will save you many times. Have it handy and have a backup for the backup! Thank me later.
  3. Baby Pain reliever: I think the pain reliever is essential because your baby will be taking immunisation injections back to back in the first 3 months and they get so cranky afterwards from the pain. Not a pretty sight.
     Having the pain reliever handy even before you go for the injections go a long way for them.
