6 Truths no one told you about starting a business as a sahm
November 9, 2019
When you decided to be a stay at home mum, you most likely did it because you wanted to be there for your kids.
Somewhere along the line either because someone wouldn’t stop suggesting one business to you or the newest MLM (multi-level marketing) or just plainly because you need money, you have decided to start a business without it dawning on you that a business is like raising another child.
Last October, I made money for the first time from my side hustle so I decided to turn it into a business and here are some of the things I have learned from starting my business while being a stay at home mum.
- Choose something you are passionate about that also has a workaround; I love photography, I have always loved photography, but the demands of being a photographer is a lot and cannot work with me being a stay at home mum. There are events you have to go for, outdoor shoots etc This is why I decided to choose a niche of photography that offers me the flexibility to be a full-time mum and a part-time photographer. Product photography. In this line of photography, I don’t have to attend meetings, see my clients, they drop their products off and pick up when I am done. I shoot my products at night when my son is in bed and it’s a win-win for everyone.
- Put in some structure: The structure I put in place is this: I created a website, put my prices on there and on my Instagram- this greatly reduces the amount of back and forth on pricing. I give myself about five working days to deliver a job and I communicate that to the client. The client arranges for drop off, picks up and anyone that wants a meeting will have to choose between Tuesdays and Thursdays(the days I don’t homeschool) . When you communicate these in writing the client knows that it’s your policy and they will abide by it.
- Be good at what you do: When you are good or keep improving at what you do when you put all these structures, the client won’t mind having to actually ‘wait’ for you or want you to be their go-to person.
- Put yourself out there: The goal of the business at the end of the day is to make money right? You have to also do the work that it requires to put yourself out there. When you are a stay at home mum and you are mostly almost home, you have to leverage on social media. Learn what you need to learn to ensure you make your social media pages appealing, use the time your children are in school or when they go to bed (If you do this once a week, in 4 weeks you would have made some progress), talk to everyone about your business and let them patronise you, bad as e bad, small change will enter.
- Don’t be desperate: Don’t be in the place of desperation. People can smell it from a mile away. Desperation will come from you being too quick to give a discount because you want to make a sale, overly reminding a client that says “I will get back to you” all these things show. When people sense your desperation they would most likely not want to do business with you. Be confident in yourself, your value and your price and let it ooze out of you!
- Where you can, give knowledge for free: In the social media world, some people might say content is king but I beg to differ, I would say loyalty is king. Serve people without strings attached and you’d be amazed how these people who now love you will market whatever you decide to sell.

We have realised that being a stay-at-home mum is a career and over the next couple of sahm articles we would talk about how we can define all these parts of our lives to create a wholesome experience for us in our stay-at-home-mum season.
Today our focus will be on family life;
We look at how to define your family in these 4 categories;
- Define the family values: This can not be done by you alone but you can facilitate the process. Prepare your spouse and children(if they are old enough) in advance for a family meeting where you are all going to discuss what your values are and the way everyone can stick to those values. Set time aside on a Saturday or Sunday to make this happen. When you are done you will have the final list printed and posted everywhere in the house as a reminder.
Here are a few articles to help with the process:

It is important to note that the values will continue to evolve over time and this is a new addition, you or your kids may not instantly get it but the values will be imbibed by constantly reinforcing it which is why everyone must be involved in the process.
- Define the family goals: We set individual goals, career goals, financial goals etc but do we remember to set the family goals? What do we want to achieve as a family? It is important that the family has something they are working on together this helps to increase the bond and gives you a sense of direction as a family.

- Define how your family runs: You take some time to define how your family will run;
Here are some questions to answer to define this;
- Schedules & Routines: A routine something you do every day and a schedule is a documentation of how your day will go. This is one of my favourites, creating routines and schedules. Children thrive on routines and it is important that we put our kids in a routine if we haven't already and stick with it. You'd see how much happier they will be. Your routine will be different based on what you decide to do, for example, my routine with my son as a homeschooling mum will be different from a mum who has her child in school. The most important thing is to incorporate all the aspects of your life into it and stick with it.

Having a schedule for everything you want to do each day is also important especially when you stay at home, it feels like the work never ends and there is a tendency to continue without putting the breaks in, it also helps you to be productive and keep track of all your activities. Here is how I create a weekly schedule that I follow;

Defining your career path as a stay at home mum || The Cuddle Blog
April 1, 2019
A happy new month to you all!!
We often hear that you are either a stay-at-home mum or a career mum and I recently listened to someone who opened my eyes to see that this is wrong. Stay-at-home mum & a career mum are not opposite.
Looking at the definition of career
“an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress” via google.com
Listening to stay-at-home mums on my Instagram and all of them saying the same things “People think all you do is lounge when you barely have time to do everything” you see that being a stay-at-home mum is hard work and most of us know that we are working mums but we don’t see ourselves as career women.
Being a SAHM, is something a mum undertakes for a significant period in her life and there are opportunities for progress. So, it is indeed a career.
Since we have established the fact that being a stay at home mum is a career, How do we define our career path?
Unlike the traditional day job where there are clearly defined paths to follow, as a stay-at-home mum you will have to define yours but here a few categories you can structure;
- Family Life: Here you will define how you want your family life to run such that there will and should be progress. This will include, defining what your family stands for, Goals for the family per-time, defining the process with which your family runs, creating routines and schedules for the family, defining how the domestic staff works
- Business/Job/Hobby (If it applies): Here you will create the road map for either starting your business, getting back into the workforce, starting your hobby and having clear action steps on what to do, timelines and deliverables.
- Children: Here you track your children, their routine, schedule, academics, values, shortcomings, create action steps on what needs to be done with each child to make them the well-rounded child you want to release to the society.
- Personal Development: Here you define your personal development goals, what you need to achieve those goals, how you want to achieve it and action steps.
- Spirituality: Here you map out how you will actively develop your relationship with God, seek opportunities to express your gifts, seek opportunities to serve others and love!
I believe the most important of this path is to always review and appraise. We have to measure our progress in all these areas because we should also get better at what we do as stay-at-home mums right?
We will look at each of these categories in-depth in the coming weeks to understand and get resources to help us create the perfect stay-at-home mum career path!
Have you considered being a stay-at-home mum as a career? Do you have a defined career path?

First Impression: The packaging was a bit underwhelming, I got over that quickly as soon as I opened it and smelt it. I absolutely loved the smell and the fact that it was all natural. I am a sucker for that.
What I loved: The smell, I loved that my son loved it. He could even take it without formula - we had a phase where he didn't like milk - I love that the foods are versatile and can be used in different recipes.

[source]
What I didn't like; there was really nothing I disliked about the product , maybe except that it finished quickly. Unfortunately, I had to stop buying from them, on 2 occasions after preparing the meals I saw ant in the food. The first time (first batch I bought) I told them and they replaced it for me but I didn't bother to tell them the second time. I am sure it wasn't from my house because, I had always kept the products in the fridge.

[source]
Verdict: Will I recommend the products? yes! this is just my experience and it has been a lot more difficult to make sure my son has a balanced meal but I would rather go through the difficulty.

Cost: Each product: N1,400
Full set N6,000 - this included Fish powder and crayfish powder
Rating: 4 Cuddly loves

First Impression: I was so excited when I saw the book online, I pre-ordered it immediately. I love the fact that the book was visually appealing. The quality of the book was above what I expected as per Naija but it wasn't there-there.

What I loved: I love that the book has variety of recipes that at you can use and not only for your baby. I loved the quality of the book, it is better than most prints done by Nigerian authors.

What I didn't like: No attention to details, there was a table of contents with page numbers but the actual pages were not numbered which makes it hard to just skip to what you need.

The structure of the book: There were repeated recipes and I confirmed that.
The quality; I know I said I loved the quality of the book overall but the pictures used shows that they were not deliberate about it. I get that it is a lot of work to make the food and take the pictures but the inconsistency with the images was too much. There were inconsistencies with the fonts and a few errors missed while editing.

Cost: N8,500 (I bought it while it was up for pre-order - don't know how much it costs now)
Rating: 3 Cuddly Love

Will I recommend this? Yes! Because, you can't have too many recipes at your finger tip.

- Let your baby nurse strategically: Anything touching your nipple now will hurt and will even hurt more if it's a baby sucking hard on it. However, when you are dealing with engorgement, you have to be strategic about the nursing. Place your baby's mouth in the direction of the "lumps" while gently massaging them in circular motions. You also have to alternate in short intervals in order to relieve the 2 breast simultaneously. If the lumps is towards your armpit use a different style to hold baby to suck towards the direction of the armpit - talk about being strategic!
Tips for dealing with engorgement || The Cuddle Blog
February 12, 2018
The day after giving birth to cuddles, I had 2 giant rocks on my chest. No one told me about it, I only heard that the first few weeks of breastfeeding will be painful. I didn't expect rocks on my chest. Before the end of the next day I was running temperature, I had lumps under my armpit and I was scared thinking it was some form of cancer - This is me being honest - after series of Google searches, I figured out what it really was ENGORGEMENT! *Phew*
What is Engorgement?
According to WebMD, "Engorgement is when your breasts are painfully full of milk". You won't be in doubt when you have it because your temperature will increase, your nymp nodes under your armpit might swell, your once succulent breasts will be replaced with rocks and it will be painful and uncomfortable.
How do you deal with it?
- Get a comfortable but firm maternity bra: This will help but them in place and avoid any jiggle because every shake, touch or poke will hurt at this point.

| Different holding styles |
- Hot Compress: Put a towel in hot water and just place over the engorged breast. Since I was still using hot water to press my body, I just included it as part of my routine to help relieve the pain and let down some milk by gently hand expressing.
- Pump: The trick with pumping to relieve engorgement is to just pump till you feel relief dazz all. If you do not intend to store the milk, there is a tendency that you start producing more milk than your baby needs because you are pumping. So, just watch out for that and just pump enough to feel relief.
These are the methods I tried. Other methods that are recommended online are;
- Cabbage
- Cold compress.

As a new Mum one of the things that will help you to have some order in your life and some sanity is a routine. It's bad enough that you don't have anytime for yourself and now your life is dictated by a little human and most especially if you are a stay at home mum, its easy to stay in the bubble and soon enough you start feeling bitter and possibly depressed because of this.
Different people have various opinions about why a routine is important but I think it all boils down to sanity. When you become a mother so many things are calling for your attention and you have to find a way to balance the need of your baby, with your husband, older kids, work and every other thing. Having a routine with your baby - which will translate to when they are older - can bring a level of order into the chaos that is motherhood and babyhood.
Parent-led routines: This is where the parent decides what and when of the babys day. It is sort of very strict as you define what will happen through out the day. I think this might work for older children and not realistic for babies.
Child-led routines: This is you form a routine around what your child decides to do based on the signs given to you. This doesn't mean your day will be unpredictable because over time, you will notice the pattern and know what to expect when. For babies this is more realistic.
A combination of both: This is a flexible combination of both the parent-led and baby-led styles. You will be willing to adjust based on what signs your baby gives you per-day under the basic structure Feed, Sleep, Play. This I have found to be the most realistic and recommended for babies between 5-12 months old.

Why is a routine important?
Different people have various opinions about why a routine is important but I think it all boils down to sanity. When you become a mother so many things are calling for your attention and you have to find a way to balance the need of your baby, with your husband, older kids, work and every other thing. Having a routine with your baby - which will translate to when they are older - can bring a level of order into the chaos that is motherhood and babyhood.
Routine creating styles
Parent-led routines: This is where the parent decides what and when of the babys day. It is sort of very strict as you define what will happen through out the day. I think this might work for older children and not realistic for babies.
Child-led routines: This is you form a routine around what your child decides to do based on the signs given to you. This doesn't mean your day will be unpredictable because over time, you will notice the pattern and know what to expect when. For babies this is more realistic.
A combination of both: This is a flexible combination of both the parent-led and baby-led styles. This I have found to be the most realistic and recommended for babies between 5-12 months old.
How can you get a non-routined baby into a routine? Glad you asked.
- Track EVERYTHING: When I had my baby, I drew a table in my journal. Tracked his feeding time, when he woke up, when he pooped, how many wet diapers a day he had till I found an app "Feed Baby" . I did the tracking for the first few months and it really helped me understand his pattern. I knew exactly what to expect and when.
- Create one that works for you & Baby: In the initial 3 months, based on the data I had, I knew what to expect and I could schedule myself based on that. Also, don't rely totally on the data. Observe your baby as well. I noticed that Cuddles is so calm and happier right before 3pm and get's really cranky - on most days - after 5 pm based on that knowledge, I can leave him to play on his own before 3 pm and moved up our evening routine to 5pm from 7pm. Observe and adjust.
Consistency is key: Whatever you decide to start based on this data gathered - Be consistent. It won't be a routine if it keeps changing and the idea is to get your baby's body clock adjusted to it. Do the work now so you can have fairly predictable days when your child is older.
NOTHING IS SET IN STONE: Keep in mind the 80-20 rule. Your child will follow the routine 80% of the time and use you to play yo-yo the other 20% - Yes! I totally just made that up but you get the point. There is also the part of them growing up and how you would have to adjust this routine based on their current needs. A newborn baby won't need so much time allotted to play but a crawling baby would. Just be sure to observe as they grow older, rinse and repeat.
Everyday will be different be sure to enjoy it.
Keep rocking motherhood.

Fun Christmas Family Traditions you can start || The Cuddle Blog
December 7, 2017
Christmas has always been a very special holiday for me because of what it represents and now that I have a Child I get to teach him about Christ and the essence of his birth which is very special to me.
Growing up, our Christmas tradition was just like most Nigerian families, decorate your home at the beginning of December, wake up to my Mum frying puff puff and cooking up a storm - fried rice, Jollof rice, chicken - then going to Church and coming back to feast on all the food till you can no longer move. Now thinking about it, it sounds like the feasting that takes place during Thanksgiving in some other parts of the world.
Since I got married - 2 years ago - my husband is always busy during the Christmas holiday and we’ve not really had a tradition as it’s always a quiet day. Now, we have a child and I won't want him to think that Christmas is not worth celebrating because he has an hardworking Daddy, I would love him to grow up with a tradition that he can appreciate and enjoy even if we have to do it right before his father gets busy.
Here are a few Christmas family traditions you can start

This is the most terrifying thing I have had to go through in all my 7 months of motherhood. It shook me!
I had just finished bathing for my 5 month old - at the time- and I dropped him to get something, he wasn't rolling over yet so I assumed that a few seconds won't hurt the next thing I knew, I heard a cry, turned and saw my naked baby on the floor - that image is etched in my memory.
I lifted him quickly and he stopped crying but I couldn't stop crying- That ugly-face-sobbing kind of cry. It was very terrifying. My husband, heard me cry and came into the room, I told him why I was crying, he took the baby and prayed for him while I picked up my phone to check Google.
I read that I should check his use of the hands and legs, if his pupil is the same size, if he is not sleepy or vomiting. I checked and checked again, he appeared fine and was laughing already but I was convinced that I had ruined him by making him fall, for the next couple of days, every thing he did - like twitch or spit up - I attributed it to the fall in my mind. I was drowning in guilt and ashamed of myself for letting my baby fall off the bed. Then I spoke to my Mum and Sister.
My Mum told me to check his head and make sure he is not crying when I touch any part of his head and if he is fine, I should just let it go and not beat myself up over it.
My sister told me of her experience and said "Don't worry, there will be more falls" and further told me not to feel guilty about it anymore. I kinda let it go after about a week. It wasn't very easy though.
Here's a few things I learnt from that experience.

Here's a few things I learnt from that experience.
- If your child is not rolling over yet, just assume he/she is and put a pillow around them if you will look away for even a second.
- One second is enough for a child to do something swiftly, it's so shocking. You'd wonder how they get the speed.
- Always have an eye on your baby.
- Let there be a padding on the sides of you bed incase your baby does fall. A rug or foot mat, anything so he/she doesn't land on the bare floor.
and if your baby eventually falls down....
- If your baby is physically alright, STOP WORRYING!!! YOU ARE NOT A BAD MOM!!!!

3 things: New Mum Essential || The Cuddle Blog
September 8, 2017
While I was doing my research for this post, I noticed that not alot of people focused on the new mothers in their "essential" posts. It is important that new mums - howbeit hard - should not forget themselves. In light of that, here are 3 things I think are essential for new mums;
- A Snack Stash (Especially if you are breastfeeding): I found myself craving for different things when I started breastfeeding. No one told me that the craving won't end, it felt that I was losing weight fast at the beginning but I wanted to eat twice as much. I wanted all the junk food to stuff my face in. I later had a stash of go-to snacks to help with the fix
- Breast Pads:
Nothin as embarrassing as a leaking breast. I didn't have a clue how serious it could be but it is verrrry important that you have enough breast pads, especially if you choose to use the disposable ones.
- Solitude: Being sleep deprived, overwhelmed, tired and feeling like you can't take it any more comes with the territory of becoming a new mum.
It's very important that you take a break and have some alone time, even if it's 30 mins to do whatever you want to do. I don't necessarily sleep when he sleeps. I take a long bath, do my nails, blog, write or just enjoy my own company in order for me to renew and refresh. At the end of the day, as much as I am doing everything for my baby, my baby also needs me to be in the right frame of mind.
What do you think is essential for a new Mum?

When we have Kids we would never do these || The Cuddle Blog
June 16, 2017
I have been following this couple even before I got pregnant. I found their videos really hilarious and this particular one resonates with me because I have started doing some things I said I won't do when we have a child. x_x
Enjoy!
What did you say you won't do before you had kids that you do now after you've had kids?

My Husband had just indicated that we needed a baby monitor because, I have to cook and I can't watch the baby sleeping until I hear him cry - Which is not very good- So, this faithful day I was home alone and cuddles had taken a nap, I wanted to use the window to quickly get some things done in the kitchen so I improvised. I hope this can help you as it helped me.

Pregnancy Diary 1: How we found out || The Cuddle Blog
May 24, 2017
Hello Everyone,
Thanks for visiting my blog today. I decided to share my Pregnancy diary, lessons I learnt in each of the phases and it will be in 5 parts. How we found out, 1-3 Trimester and Birth Story. I hope you enjoy it.
Before we got married, we talked about having kids and our desire was to wait a couple of months before we tried, that was the agreement but God had other plans.
We were not trying and we were not not trying. To be honest, I was terrified of getting pregnant because I knew the responsibility it comes with - or I thought I knew - after the first 6 months, we already had family concerned for us but we were not worried at all as we had been working on ourselves and getting to know each other better to focus on. Looking back now, I am glad we had that time before we got pregnant.

The Cuddle Blog || First Post
May 12, 2017
Hello there and Welcome to the Cuddle Blog.
I didn't give too much thought to life after the Birth of my baby, I just wanted to go through the pregnancy phase one day at a time. It was my first pregnancy and asides what I had read and heard about, it was all new and knowing that everyone's experience was different I really had to take each day at a time because I didn't know what to expect. Since it was my first pregnancy, we decided not to share it with the world mostly because it was a different experience and I didn't want the extra attention from the world, looking back now I wish I could've documented my experience for atleast one person to learn. Which is why we are here...
The Birth of this blog.
