Activities to explore colours with your preschooler || Homeschool week 5 || Lagos Homeschooler
May 28, 2020
We explored colours in our homeschool this week
"Why are you like this, why can't you just put this child in school like everyone else?" ⠀
"What if you ruin him for life? - you know there is no second chance" ⠀
"Does he even know the things he is supposed to know?" ⠀
I kid you not, all these thoughts have passed my mind a number of times this year and because of that I decided to use this week as a form of evaluation, I was asking a lot of "What is this?" the boy has even picked it up to start asking me "Mummy, what is this?" not because he doesn't know but so that he can tell me "No mummy, It is Xyz" 🤷 ⠀
All-in-all we had a good week;
I planned with the different colours to explore, activities to do on which days, outing to go, books to read.
Colours to explore:
Red
Green
Blue
Yellow
Black
Purple
Orange
Split activities up into the days of the week and created activities around them.
⠀
- Ability to follow instructions ⠀
- Focus on one activity - attention span ⠀
- Developmental milestones ⠀
- What he is interested in based on the activities. ⠀
We got all materials from @thecuddleplayhouse
__⠀
I was surprised to see what he had picked up over time, from our interactions, the places we go, what he watches and all, it is amazing how much they soak up. I learnt this week to trust the process and give him much more credit than I do. I am also learning to stop worrying too much. I mean, what's the worst that can happen right?⠀

My Thoughts on homeschool this week:
You might look at me from afar and think I have this homeschooling thing down to the T, well not exactly. I still have a lot of doubts. ⠀"Why are you like this, why can't you just put this child in school like everyone else?" ⠀

This is the second time we are going to LCC, the first time I wasted my money as my son ran away as soon as he saw the monkeys and in his defence, I never prepared him for it and since then he's been asking for the monkeys, so when the opportunity to hang out with a fellow homeschooling mama came up, I jumped on it!⠀
When you get to LCC, you have to pay and wait for the tour 'crowd' to be plenty before you go for the tour, the tour guide will then give you a pep talk about what to expect and how they don't tame their animals, so what you see is what you get. Lol. then you commence the tour, the walk was really really long and walking with a toddler made it even longer and I didn't enjoy it at all because I wasn't a huge fan of the unpredictability of the place, like a monkey cam just jump out and stay beside you (this actually happened twice) but as soon as we got to the end of the walk I started to enjoy it.
__
The highlight for me watching the fishes as they came and gathered together, it was a delight to watch them in their habitat and an amazing thing happened while we were watching them s duck came and gulped one fish down its throat(come and stealth moves) we the crowd went wild. LOL.
love that they had environmental sustainability information around the environment,
What I didn't like, there's the Naija syndrome of maintenance culture that is lost, while you have to give them kudos if you've been around for that long but they can do better sha. I also didn't like that as soon as the tour guide got to the canopy walk-way side he abandoned us that had children and couldn't go on the walkway, we literally guessed our way after that point. It was an adventure and the kids absolutely loved it!!!!
Student: 300
Adult: 1000

Things to note.
- They close their gate to the public at 4:30 (but if you are already inside can stay till 6 pm), it says 5:30 online but it's not true. We were turned back the first time we went.
- You can also decide not to do the long walk, they have a back gate that takes you directly to the family park where the fishes are and you can have a lovely picnic.

We all have heard the studies that show that excessive screen time is not good for kids but how do you go about it for your addicted child?
Strategies to reduce screen time for your addicted toddler.
May 22, 2020
We all have heard the studies that show that excessive screen time is not good for kids but how do you go about it for your addicted child?
Let’s talk about some practical strategies to help you;
- Talk to them: Give them a warning before you start to cut it back. “Hey baby, so mummy noticed that you watch a lot of TV, I know you love your programs but mummy loves you more and wants to spend time with you, so from tomorrow we will start cutting back the time you spend watching tv so we can hang out, okay?” Or use a line that involves you telling them that too much tv is not good for them and you want what is best for them.
- Take away personal devices; if they have a personal device, take it away and use the TV, while it is a good strategy it also helps for them to know you are in control of when it comes on and when it goes off however with a personal device, they own it and there is a risk of them staying longer than necessary if the adults are watching their own TV.
- Cut back on the hours one day at a time; What is the maximum time they spend daily? From the next day start cutting it down till you get to the number of hours you are happy with, ensure you give them warnings before the TV goes off. “You have 30 mins left and the TV goes off” and on and on till it’s time.
- As your child continues to get used to the new habit of not requesting for TV, ensure you reward them. Reward doesn’t have to be like sweets or anything a simple acknowledgement, “I noticed you’ve not asked for Tv for a few hours, way to go darling” or give a high five, anything that shows that you notice the new behaviour can be a reward.
- Now give a designated TV time that they will look forward to and stick with it. If you want to do one hour daily - stick with it. If you want to do once a week - just stay consistent so they can look forward to it!
- Have alternative activities in hand; Books, crafts, water play, free play, outdoor play etc. have alternative activities for your child to engage in when the tv or tab goes off.
It’s important to note that it’s not going to happen as easy as 123 like I just stated here but you can begin the journey, you’d meet with a lot of tantrums and defiance but you got to stick to your guns and look at the end goal!
I hope this helps you to reduce screen time for your kids.

Benefits of Circle time || Sample Circle time routine || The Cuddle Blog
May 20, 2020
I talk about circle time a lot and how we use it in our home. One of the questions I get is “What is Circle Time” We will talk about circle time in this post and all there is to know about it.
So, What is Circle time?
According to Wikipedia
Circle time refers to any time that a group of people are sitting together for an activity involving everyone
Circle time is mostly used in schools as a way to promote social interactions among children, listening, increase attention span, physical activities and as a way to introduce new concepts and skills but who says it can’t be adapted to our homes?
The benefits are still the same as with those in school as when you introduce circle time in your home, you are promoting social interaction, encouraging listening with your child(ren), increasing physical activities etc. It will be a set time for you to bond with your child(ten) while you engage in different activities or as a way to transition into a different part of your day.
What’s a simple circle time routine?
- Say Hello or Sing the hello song.
- Weather Song
- Different Action Songs
- National Anthem
- Theme song
- Read a book
- Introduce what you might be working on in your homeschool that day
It differs per person and family and you can be flexible with how yours go, just ensure that you incorporate activities that make them move, dance, listen, sit down.
Things to note about circle time
- Your child might not be interested at first and that is okay. Just keep doing it and inviting them to join you. One day you’d sing a song they like and they would join you.
- Let go of perfection. It won’t be perfect especially with younger kids, just be consistent.
- You have to plan ahead, you won’t know until when you are in the thick of things and all the songs you think you know are not coming to mind.
- Have a routine but also be flexible. Have some particular songs or activities you do that it predictable but also be flexible enough to listen to your child
- Be focused. Put your phone away, attention span is very short and you can lose them quickly when they are not engaged. Don’t.
- Depending on the age of your child, circle time should not be for too long.
What do you do in your circle time?

How to increase your child's attention span || The Cuddle Blog
May 18, 2020
"...the only problem is I can't get her to sit still through an activity"
Quite a number of parents are worried about the attention span of their children and in this article, we would talk about what is a real attention span for children at different ages, the type of attention there is, what we can do to increase attention span and when we should be worried.
What is an attention span
There are different studies that the numbers can be different but here's how to calculate it
This list only shows what they are capable of, it doesn't exactly mean your 2-year-old will actually sit for an activity for 6 mins because there are other factors that inform if they will actually sustain their attention for the stipulated time. The time we should be worried as parents are when all things being equal (check the what affects attention span below) is when they still can't seem to pay attention and hyperactive. Don't forget to always consult your paediatrician if you feel anything is out of place.
Quite a number of parents are worried about the attention span of their children and in this article, we would talk about what is a real attention span for children at different ages, the type of attention there is, what we can do to increase attention span and when we should be worried.
What is an attention span
Attention span is the amount of time spent concentrating on a task before becoming distracted [Wikipedia]
What is the realistic real attention span;
Children in their early years are not developed for the expectations we put on them in different areas of their lives, from walking to running to writing, and more so in our part of the world but today let's look at what we should expect. There are different studies that the numbers can be different but here's how to calculate it
Children's attention span is 3-5 mins per year of your child age. Here is an example chart:
This list only shows what they are capable of, it doesn't exactly mean your 2-year-old will actually sit for an activity for 6 mins because there are other factors that inform if they will actually sustain their attention for the stipulated time. The time we should be worried as parents are when all things being equal (check the what affects attention span below) is when they still can't seem to pay attention and hyperactive. Don't forget to always consult your paediatrician if you feel anything is out of place.
Factors that affect attention span;
- Environment; A highly stimulating environment can affect the attention span of your child. If there is a lot of distraction in the environment, it's not realistic to expect that they will be focused on the activity. Even as adults, who have the developmental capacity to focus for longer, we get distracted by something as simple as our phone ringing how much more kids?
- Maternal Behavior: This study shows that maternal behaviour can affect the attention span of children. I would not necessarily say maternal behaviour, I would say primary caregiver because whoever interacts with the child the most can affect them. The summary of the study is if we are not warm and interactive with our children and we fall back to snapping at them, nagging them about something constantly intruding into their focused time to "correct" them can interfere with the cognitive function of focus that is developing.
- Their needs are not met: If the needs of the child are not met, there is so much focus that can be achieved. The need for food, expend energy, sleep, love, are some of the things that can affect them.
- Exhaustion: We know how hyperactive children get when they want to sleep? Imagine trying to get them to do an activity that requires focus at that time. Isn't it impossible? Sometimes we don't pay attention to those things.
How can we help our children increase their attention span?
- Interest-based activities: Have you noticed how your children are always focused more on activities they either choose themselves or are interested in? Even as adults, when you are somewhere you don't want to be you start fiddling with your phone or sleeping. Think about how you can make the thing you want your child to do interest them. e.g if your child is into Legos and you want to teach a new math concept, there is nothing wrong with using legos to introduce the concept and you'd see how much difference that makes.
- Step back and observe: When your child is into an activity and you think they are not doing it 'correctly' just step back and observe when they are done, you can show them the right approach to it. I am also guilty of jumping in to show the right way but I'm learning that my jumping is a distraction too. So, step back and observe. The reason why you are observing is to let the cognitive function of focus continue to develop without your interruption.
- Provide structure for the day: A routine can help them understand what comes next and can help them know when it is time for a sit-down and when they do it over time it would be something they expect throughout the day.
- Pick optimal times to schedule focus activities: Whatever time you know to be your child's optimal time, create the focus activities around that time and lower your expectations based on circumstances that are happening around in your lives per time e.g we are in the middle of a pandemic and children all over the world have been thrown into a new normal, let's not expect super well-behaved children that do all the activities put in front of them quietly and follow all the instructions without properly stabilising them for the new normal. If you've just moved house is another example. Just remain sensitive.
- Provide outlets for the 'distraction': Whatever your child loves to do instead of the activity provide an outlet for that. E.g your child will rather be jumping instead of doing an activity, create a jumping time where everyone is jumping and get it out of the system.
- Anchor your activity to their interesting 'distraction': The activity you want them to be engaged in anchor it to their interesting distraction. Let me give different examples, in the previous point, the child wanted to jump and maybe you want them to pack up their toys, say something like "Pack up your toys then it would be jumping time" If you want to let them watch an educational program, you can say "Let's watch 5 mins of national geography then you can watch Peppa pig" does that make sense? The consequence for doing A(what you want them to do) is B(What they want to do)
One thing to note is that you don't force the children to do what they don't want to do, these are just strategies to help you ensure they get to do activities that will help increase their attention span. One will at least work for your child.
5 areas of attention to note;
- Focused Attention; When a child's attention is focused on visual or auditory information
- Selective Attention; When a child can filter all the distractions around them and focus on a task
- Shifting Attention; When a child can begin a task stop and focus their attention on another task
- Sustained Attention; When a child can focus their attention on a task for an extended period of time
- Divided Attention: When a child can multi-task.
[Source]
Children reach each area of attention at different ages, they will continue to grow and increase their capacity to pay attention. While we continue to present to them opportunities to increase their attention span let's not forget to create a loving environment they need to thrive and exercise more patience.

SAHM
stay at home mum
MONEY!! Money is one of the biggest issues when you are thinking of becoming a SAHM. The world will worry for you, you will worry for yourself and while I don't believe that money should be too much in the focus when talking to SAHMs but we know that it is also important.
What are the ways you can make money as a SAHM?
1. LET YOUR FAMILY GIVE YOU A SALARY:
Yes! Sometimes all you need to do is "ask". I know some people will say "Good luck with that" but the truth is that it is possible. I also understand that all fingers are not equal (Income, reasonable partner) but it's important to be realistic before you ask, but some people only need to just ask! It's really that simple. ⠀
Being realistic includes knowing what your partner earns and knowing if it's realistic for them to give you something small (no matter how small) without it affecting major family expenses. ⠀
Men are logical, some of them just need a logical reason why they need to pay you something, you can make a list of what you are saving the family by being a stay at home mum and explain that you also don't want to have to keep asking for money for every single thing. ⠀
It's absolutely important not to make the conversation too 'serious' because you don't want to put your partner under additional pressure, you can always add to your partner "There is no pressure, just something for you to think about and consider" ⠀
For some people, it might happen immediately you ask, for others it will be an ongoing conversation till your point is heard but do have the conversation as much as you need to without the pressure. You get?
Think of how you can strategise your kind of business. If you are passionate about make-up, do you have to do make-up for people?
Are there people who can churn out work the same day? YES! Am I one of them? No! Do I have customers? Yes, as much as those people? No! Opportunity cost!
__
In my product-based business, I am free (days I don't have to be there to homeschool) on Tues and Thursdays. I schedule everything I need to do in those days, (going to market, packing playboxes, editing videos etc etc.) If your child goes to school you have some hours 5 days a week - make the best of those hours.
As small as my businesses are, they have a process, it is not as full-blown in a word document as all the big companies but I have my processes (written down in a book) for writing a blog post, snapping a bag, snapping a shoe, what to look out for, social media post (not all), market, packing playboxes etc. this makes it more efficient and less time-consuming.
__
Leverage technology, in any way and every way. Automate your processes, start with google forms, let them fill out a form to order or WhatsApp or use invoicing apps to help you eliminate paper and book.
__
You have to be organized. I know it's not easy and it won't happen in a day honestly. But you have to be organized at least 60% of the time, planning and planning is important. Like someone can't just tell me to come now (well except it is from UN sha) berra pick a Tues or Thursday.

Starting a business is another way to make money. Know that the way you do your business as a SAHM is going to be different and make peace with that first then;
- Identify the business you want to do
- Strategise the lease path of resistance
- Create a process around what you do (after like a month of doing it) and document it
- Leverage on technology and work towards automation
- Be ready to sacrifice
- You have to be organized to the T
- Delegate as you grow
- Let excellence be your watchword ⠀
I will give an example of my life.
I love photography but it is very demanding as a business, If you have to take portraits, you know it's largely dependent on when the client is available, so I went into product photography (I wish I could say it was strategic but I make it work) In product photography I designed my business model to charge extra if a client wants to be in the shoot, this way I control my time and I can shoot at night when my son is sleeping. My process also says they get their images 3-5 business days after the shoot which gives me enough turn around time to get the job out. - That is my least path to resistant.Think of how you can strategise your kind of business. 4. AFFILIATE MARKETING:
Affiliate marketing, how does it work? You see when you recommend a product to someone and they buy from that vendor, the vendor is happy(because they made more sale), you are happy that you helped someone out? ⠀
How about if you believe in a product so much that you don't mind marketing it to your friends? and instead of you to just feel fulfilled you get a commission on the product? The vendor is happy, you are happy? because you made small money. ⠀
How do people use it? They sign up for an affiliate network say Jumia, and I have a youtube/IG/Blog where I either share my life, share reviews and when I am talking about certain products I say "I got it from Jumia, if you want you can use the link in my bio to purchase" they use your link you get small money, the more you sell, the more money you get. Simple maths. ⠀
Only it's not that simple, you need numbers for it to make sense, but I will say if you want to go this route, start from when your audience is small so they are used to your style of doing things and as you grow your income grows too. you get? ⠀
The logic is that they won't get those customers anyway if it wasn't for your influence... so, pay me small money from your profit for my effort on your business. you get? ⠀
How can you use it? ⠀
Small businesses around you, there are quite a number of small businesses who won't mind for you to actively push their business for them and get a certain commission, the downside is that they are not established and you are not sure how they can be, so pick people with integrity and ensure you document your agreement. ⠀
If you are in the diaspora or you have major traffic from the diaspora, you need to use Amazon, they have a wide range of products that you can always talk about and their network is tried and trusted. ⠀
Jumia and Konga have affiliate networks that I cannot vouch for (if you've used them you can comment below) and there are quite a number of other high paying affiliate networks online. ⠀
__⠀
A lot of bloggers/YouTubers and SAHMs in diaspora use these affiliate networks to earn millions. I kid you not, it's huge and this is kinda sorta the model for network marketing.
